My cousins and I were fortunate to have all of our grandparents and half of our great-parents. You could call them at anytime and even pop in for a visit without notice. Our children don't have that same luxury since all of our parents are retired and busier than ever. It's unnecessary to call them on the home phone  since 

the voice message will be the only greeting that you get. Surprise visits are unwise because they leave the house at 11am not to return until after 8pm. They all have cell phones, but if you're like Loving Mother, she doesn't answer. A text message explaining that she's at a charity board  meeting, an event, or a memorial is the usual response. Dad answers with a promise to return the call, but he's usually with other veterans or his lodge brothers. Whew - our generation of parents, aunts, and uncles are busy! 

​Kiplinger explained some of the phenomenon in, "Baby Boomers are Rewriting Retirement History."[1] Author Scott Hanson, CFP noted that life span has doubled in the past century to about 79 now. Healthy seniors that are 62 today have a 25% chance of living to be age 90.
